Education and the lack of its need has been one of the most pressing challenges VSSM tackles daily while working with the nomadic communities. The state government lists 40 communities under the nomadic and de-notified communities out of which 19 of the most marginalised nomadic communities have absolutely zero or negligible level of literacy. Through generations the nomadic communities have lived on their inherent wisdom, knowledge and skills however the need for education has never been as vital as it is today for these communities to survive.
Education is one of the important components of programs VSSM undertakes to empower these communities. A multi pronged approach using various strategies are adopted by VSSM to ensure children attain access to education. In the settlements where government schools have not reached or where children face difficulties accessing the nearby government schools VSSM operates its own program of Bridge Schools. Currently more than 800 children are learning with these schools. Apart from these schools VSSM makes continuous efforts to enrol children form nomadic communities to favourable educational institutions. It is ensured that kids perform well at such institutes, This year we put five boys in Deesa’a St. Xaviers School and Hostel. Vishnu, Shravan and Vipul- 3 boys from Fulvadi community were enrolled in standard 9th whereas Sendho and Karan were enrolled in standard 8th and 5th respectively. Both these boys are from Saraniya community. The Fulvadee boys are first to reach 9th grade while the Saraniyaa boys are first generation school goers.The chief administrator of this institute Father Harry Pinto is a very carrying and affectionate gentleman showering lot of love on these boys.
I visited these boys on 27th Aug to see how they were doing and adjusting to the new setup. Father Pinto was all praise for the boys.
'This Karan loves to be naughty, everyday we get to hear about his pranks from other boys!!’ said Father Pinto with a loving smile.
‘Is it necessary to be naughty everyday, Karan, what if we try to reduce the amount of pranks?’ I inquired.
‘Once a week should be OK, right Karan??’ joked Father Pinto.
On hearing this Karan could not stop him laughter. After a hearty laugh he added ‘Ben, we love begin here, it is so much fun’
The camaraderie between the students and the Father reminded me of Totto Chan and her teacher.
We are extremely grateful to Shri. Chandrakantbhai Mataliya for sponsoring education of these boys and being a reason behind their smiles.
A few months back when Vishnu, Shravan and Vipul expressed their desire to study further their families had completely refused. ‘You know how to read and write so where is the need to study further, pick up the sack and set out to beg’ is what their families asked them to do. ‘I will not go to beg, I want to study further,’ demanded Vishnu. After his exams were over Vishnu called up VSSM team member Naranbhai and narrated his dilemma. Naranbhai and Bhagubhai spoke to Vishnu’s father and other members of the settlement. Eventually they agreed to send the boys for further studies.
If such trend continues with other communities and settlements, a better tomorrow is not faraway…..

વિચરતી જાતિમાં શિક્ષણની જ્યોત પ્રજ્વલિત થઇ ચુકી છે
વિચરતી જાતિમાં ૪૦ સમુદાયનો સમાવેશ સરકારે કર્યો છે આ ૪૦માંથી ૧૯ જાતિઓ એવી છે કે, જેમાં પ્રાથમિક શિક્ષણનું પ્રમાણ ખુબ આછું આમ તો નહીવત કહીએ તો પણ ચાલે.. vssm આ સમુદાયના બાળકો ભણતા થાય એ માટે પ્રયત્નશીલ છે. જે માટે તંબુશાળા અને હોસ્ટેલો ચાલે છે જેમાં ૮૦૦ ઉપરાંત બાળકો ભણે છે.
vssmની હોસ્ટેલમાં તો બાળકો ભણે જ છે એ સિવાય પણ એવી હોસ્ટેલ જ્યાં સારું શિક્ષણ મળતું હોય ત્યાં પણ આપણે બાળકોને દાખલ કરાવીએ છીએ અને આ બાળકો સારું ભણે એનું ધ્યાન પણ રાખીએ છીએ.. આ વર્ષે ફૂલવાદી સમુદાયના વિષ્ણુ, શ્રવણ અને વિપુલ જેઓ ધોરણ -૯માં અને સરાણીયા સમુદાયના સેધો ધો. ૮ અને કરણ ધો.૫માં ભણે છે તેમને ડીસાની ‘સેન્ટ ઝેવિયર્સ સ્કૂલ’ અને હોસ્ટેલમાં દાખલ કર્યા. ફૂલવાદીમાંથી આ ત્રણ છોકરાંઓ પહેલાં છે જે ધો.૯માં ભણી રહ્યા છે. જયારે સરાણીયાની આ પહેલી પેઢી છે જે ભણી રહી છે... આ સ્કૂલના સંચાલક ફાધર હેરી પિંટો આ બાળકો ઉપર ખુબ પ્રેમ રાખે.
૨૭/૮/૧૪ ના રોજ આ બાળકોને મળવા ગઈ ત્યારે ફાધરે આ પાંચે ભણવામાં ખુબ સારા છે એમ વાત કરી અને કહ્યું, ‘આ કરણ ખુબ મસ્તી કરે.. રોજ એની મસ્તી અંગે મને બીજા વિદ્યાર્થી પાસેથી સાંભળવા મળે, શિક્ષકને પણ દોડાવે..’ (ખુબ પ્રેમાળ હાસ્ય સાથે ફાધરે આ કહ્યું) મેં કરણને કહ્યું, રોજ મસ્તી ના કરીએ તો ના ચાલે? આપણે એનું પ્રમાણ જરા ઓછું કરવાની કોશિશ કરીએ તો? હું આ વાત કરતી હતી ત્યાં ફાધરે કહ્યું, અઠવાડિયે એક વખત ચાલે કરણ? ધીર- ગંભીર મોઢું રાખી ઉભેલા કરણને ફાધરની આ વાતથી એવું જોરથી હસું આવ્યું.. અને પછી કહ્યું, ‘બેન અમને અહી મજા આવે છે...’ મને તોતોચાન અને એના શિક્ષક યાદ આવી ગયા. આ બાળકોની ફી ભરતા આદરણીય શ્રી ચંદ્રકાંતભાઈ માટલીયા નો આભાર માનું છું જેમના કારણે આ બાળકોના મોઢા પર મીઠું સ્મિત છે ...
વિષ્ણુ, શ્રવણ અને વિપુલે આગળ ભણવાની વાત કરી ત્યારે એમના પરિવારે એમને સ્પસ્ટ ના પાડી હતી. આપણે વળી ભણીને શું કરવાનું? લખતાં-વાંચતા આવડી ગયું બહુ થઇ ગયું.. હવે ખભે ઝોળી નાખી માંગવાનું કરો! પણ વિષ્ણુએ ના પાડી એણે કહ્યું, ‘હું માંગવાનું કામ નહિ કરું, મારે ભણવું છે..’ એની પરીક્ષા પત્યા પછી vssmના કાર્યકર નારણને વિષ્ણુએ ફોન કર્યો અને આગળ ભણવાની ઈચ્છા વ્યક્ત કરી અને એમાં શું તકલીફ છે એ અંગે વાત કરી. વિષ્ણુના બાપા અને વસાહતના લોકોને નારણ અને ભગુભાઈએ સમજાવ્યા છેવટે વિષ્ણુ સાથે શ્રવણ અને વિપુલને ભણાવવા આગેવાનો તૈયાર થયા.
વિચરતી જાતિમાં શિક્ષણની જ્યોત પ્રજ્વલિત થઇ ચુકી છે હવે એમનું ભવિષ્ય ઉજળું થવાને ઝાઝી વાર નથી...
