“My dependence is gone”
“My husband passed away before the earthquake. At that time my hands and legs worked, so I could manage the kitchen work. But with age, my hands and legs stopped working.”
“Ba, how do you manage your livelihood?”
“I receive 1,200 rupees from the government and get ration through coupons. I try to manage with that.”
“Is that enough?”
“A little support comes from relatives and others.”
“So if we don’t give you ration, would it be okay?”
“No, it wouldn’t. Because of what you give, my dependence is gone. I can cook and eat by my own choice. From the 1,200 rupees I buy vegetables and milk, and if I need medicines, I buy those. If you don’t give ration, I would have to manage everything within those 1,200 rupees, right?”
“So are we doing a good thing?”
“You fill the stomachs of helpless people like us—that itself is called good work, isn’t it?”
This conversation took place with Nathiba, who lives in Madhapar, Rajkot. She has no son or daughter. The monthly ration we provide helps her survive.
Not having to live with dependence is a very big thing.
VSSM provides ration to 750 destitute elderly women and men. The voice of all of them is the same.
Our Kanubhai and Yash regularly take care of the elderly and deliver ration. Having such dedicated workers with us is a matter of pride.
"મારા ઘરવાળા તો ધરતીકંપ પહેલા વયા ગ્યા. પણ તે વખતે હાથ પગ હાલતા તે હું રસોડા કરવા જતી. પણ ઉંમર થાતા હાથ પગ ચાલવાના બંધ થ્યા."
"તે બા તમારુ ગુજરાન કેમ ચાલે?"
"સરકારના 1200 મળે ને કુપનનું રાશન મળે એમાંથી હંકારવા કોશીસ કરુ."
"તે ચાલી જાય?"
"થોડુ કુટુંબવાળા ને બીજા ટેકો કરતા."
"તો અમે રાશન ન આપીયે તો ચાલે?"
"ના ચાલે. તમે આલો એના લીધે મારી ઓશિયાળી મટી ગઈ. મારી મરજીથી રાંધીને ખાઈ હકુ. સરકારના 1200 મલે એમાંથી શાક, દૂધ લાવું. દવાની જરૃર પડે તો એ લઉં. જો તમે ન આપો તો મારે 1200માં જ હંકારવાનું ને?"
"તો અમે સારુ કામ કરીએ છીએ?"
"તમે અમ જેવા નિરાધારની આંતરડી ઠારો તે ઈ હારુ જ કેવાય ને?"
રાજકોટના માધાપરમાં રહેતા નાથીબા સાથે આ બધી વાતો થઈ. બાને દિકરા દીકરી નથી. આપણે દર મહિને રાશન આપીયે એમાંથી એમનો ગુજારો ચાલે.
ઓશિયાળી વેઠવાની ન રહે એ બહુ મોટી વાત. VSSM 750 નિરાધાર બા -દાદાને રાશન આપે. એ તમામનો આ સૂર પણ આજ..
