Enterprising Veenaben….

For many years now nomadic families have been staying on the government wasteland on a small hill in Kamod village of Ahmedabad’s Daskroi block. One of these families is of Veenaben Raval. Veenaben has been staying here with her husband, four children and ageing in-laws. The couple had to work really hard to make ends meet and support the medical bills of old parents. It was important that Veenaben pitched in and  earned as her income was important for her family. 

The couple earned around 6000 a month but this was not enough to meet the needs of growing children. Educating children was of prime importance for Veenaben an area where she was not ready to compromise. Working more, working hard was acceptable for her. But her hard work did not bring more money. Manual labour and back breaking work does not earn you more money!! A thought crossed her mind. What if she starts her own business?? What business can it be?? A highway passes from next to the settlement where the families reside. A small hotel or a tea kiosk there would do a good business. This would require initial capital, who can support?? what to do??

Veenaben met Ilaben, VSSM team member in the region. VSSM lent Rs. 20,000 to Veenaben to set up a tea stall. While she managed the tea stall her husband worked as manual labour. People liked the tea Veenaben made and as word of the new tea stall and the tasty tea Veenaben made spread her customers increased. People prefered to drink tea at her stall rather than going to a hotel. Gradually she began keeping biscuits, wafers and other packed snacks too. Somedays her husband would come and help her, but running the tea-stall was her domain. 

The children are receiving good education, studying well. The family is happy. Veenaben has earned a new status in the society and has become a role model for other women in the village. 

કમોડ તા. દસ્ક્રોઈ ટેકરા પર સરકારી પડતરમાં એક આરડાનાં છાપરીવાળા ઘરમાં ચાર બાળકો, સાસુ-સસરા સાથે રહેતા વીણાબેન રાવળનાં પતિ દાંડીએ ટ્રેક્ટરનાં ફેરા કરે. મહિને છ એક હજાર જેટલી આવકમાં આઠ વ્યક્તિઓ જેમાં ૩ દીકરીએ અને દીકરાને ભણાવવા, સારી રીતે પાલનપોષણ કરવું. સાસુ-સસરાની સંભાળ લેવી ક્યાંથી સંભવે?

ગામમાં બજારમાં એક ચાની કીટલી બંધ હતી.સામે એક હોટલ...કદાચ એટલેય ધંધોબંધ થયો હોય. એક પડકાર હતો. વીણાબેને મનોમન નક્કી કર્યું. આ ચાની કીટલી શરૂ કરવી. પણ આ બધું કરવા પૈસા...?

વિ.એસ.એસ.એમ. ના કાર્યકર ઇલાબેનને મળ્યા. પોતાનાં અંતરની વાત જણાવી. વિ.એસ.એસ.એમ તરફથી રૂ.૨૦,૦૦૦/-(વીસ હજાર) લોન આપવામાં આવી.અને ચાની કીટલીની શરૂઆત થઇ.

ચાનો સ્વાદ લોકોને .કોઠે પડી ગયો. ચા પીવા હોટલમાં જવાને બદલે કીટલી પર ગ્રાહકોની ભીડ વધવા લાગી. કીટલી પર ચા સાથે બિસ્કીટ પણ રાખવાનું શરૂ કર્યું. કુરકુરે,વેફર

જેવી આઈટમો પણ રાખી. ક્યારેક પતિને કામ ન હોય તો એય વીણાબહેનને મદદરૂપ થાય. પણ કીટલી તો વીણાબહેન જ ચલાવે.

આજે ચારેય બાળકો સુંદર શિક્ષણ મેળવી રહ્યા છે. પરિવાર સુખી છે. ઉધમશીલ વીણાબહેન આજે સમાજમાં સાદરભર્યું સ્થાન ભોગવે છે. ગામની સ્ત્રીઓ માટે એક રોલ મોડલ બન્યા છે. વિ.એસ.એસ.એમ ના હપ્તા નિયમિત ભરાય છે.
