Gangaben supplementing the family income…..

Income from livelihood that hardly  sustains the family, big family size, out of school children, children helping parents with the daily chores as well as labour is a norm with the nomadic families. Ragnathbhai of Diyodar is engaged in the occupation of trimming and shaping buffalo bones.  The cattle bones need to shaped and trimmed when they grown long and the cattle cannot sustain its weight. The income from the occupation is not enough to sustain the family of 9. Ragnathbhai and Gangaben have 7 children. Gangaben always felt the need to help her husband and earning that extra income. 

One day she happened to speak to VSSM team member Naranbhai about her urge to help her husband support the large family. It was difficult to sustain such a large family on one income she told Naranbhai. The relationship the team members have been able to built up with the community members helps them confide in the team members. 

'The organisation will help you out but you will have to think of controlling  your family size first,’ replied Naranbhai.

VSSM gave a loan of Rs. 10,000 to Gangaben from which she bought tools for farming and other purposes. Gangaben and Ragnathbhai together run the business. Whenever Ragnathbhai visit other villages for his work he takes the tools along and sells them there. In this way they have not remained confined to one village itself as a result their sales have been good. 

Gangaben is optimistic that they will be abel to repay the loan soon.

ગુજરાતીમાં અનુવાદ...

દિયોદરમાં રહેતા રગનાથભાઈ ગાડલિયા ભેંસોના શીંગડા ઘડવાનું કામ કરે. પરિવારમાં ૭ બાળકો. આર્થિક હાલત ખરાબ. રગનાથભાઈના પત્ની ગંગાબહેનને રગનાથભાઈને મદદ કરવાની ઘણી હોંશ પણ કેવી રીતે મદદ કરવી તે સમજાતું નહોતું. 

vssmના કાર્યકરો નિયમિત રૂપે વિચરતી જાતિની વસાહતોમાં જાય અને તેમને મદદરૂપ થાય. આમ તો હવે આ પરિવારો સાથે એટલો ઘરોબો થઇ ગયો છે કે એમના સુખ દુ:ખની વાતો એ ખુલ્લા મને આપણે કહેતા હોય છે. લગભગ બે મહિના પહેલા vssmના કાર્યકર નારણભાઈ ગાડલિયા વસાહતમાં ગયા. નારણભાઈને જોઇને ગંગાબહેને પોતાનો પરિવાર મોટો છે પૂરું થતું નથી કંઈક ધંધો કરવો છે એમ કહી મદદ કરવાં કહ્યું. નારણભાઈએ કહ્યું, ‘સંસ્થા તમને ચોક્કસ મદદ કરશે પણ તમારે પણ કુટુંબ નિયોજન અંગે વિચારવું પડશે.’ મૂળ તો વિચરતી જાતિઓમાં મોટાભાગના કુટુંબોમાં કુટુંબની સાઈઝ એટલી મોટી હોય છે કે, મજૂરી કરતા માં-બાપ માટે આખા કુટુંબને નિભાવવું મુશ્કેલ બની જાય છે.. પરિણામે કુટુંબમાંથી મોટા થતા બાળકો ધીમે ધીમે મજૂરી કરતા થઇ જાય છે... અને શિક્ષણ તો રહી જ જાય છે...

ગંગાબેનને આપણે રૂ.૧૦,૦૦૦ની લોન આપી. જેમાંથી એ લોખંડની ઘર વપરાશની ચીજો ઉપરાંત ખેતીમાં ઉપયોગી ઓજારો પણ લાવ્યાં અને વેપાર શરુ કર્યો. બે દિવસ પહેલાં નારણભાઈ કામ કેવું ચાલે છે એ જોવા અને પૂછવા ગયા તો સાધનો લઈને ધંધો કરવાં એકલા ગંગાબહેન જ બેઠા હતાં. કુતુહલવશ નારણભાઈએ પૂછ્યું, ‘રગનાથભાઈ ક્યાં?’ 

‘એ તો શીંગડા ઘડવાના કામે ગ્યા છે..’ 

‘તો આ ધંધો તમે જ સાંભળો છો?’ 

‘હા વળી ઉલટાનું એ(રગનાથભાઈ) શીંગડા બનાવવાના કામ માટે જયારે ગામડામાં જાય ત્યારે ખેતીમાં કામ આવતા દાતરડાં, કોઢી, પાવડો વગેરે પણ લેતા જાય અને એ પણ વેચે છે. એટલે સારું ચાલે છે. વકરો પણ સારો થાય છે. આવું જ સારું ચાલશે તો અમે તમારી લોન ઝડપથી પૂરી કરી દઈશું.’
