Meer families exercising their right to vote for the first time during the 2014 elections

A couple of years ago with the support of Aarti Foundation VSSM began working in Kutch’s Bhachau region. Bhachau has substantial concentration of nomadic population. Here we came across 10 Meer families living in Samakhiyari. Work takes them to distant regions but eventually they come back to Samakhyari. These families had no document to prove their identity. VSSM worked to get them their citizenry documents. 

The special orders of Chief Electoral Officer Mrs. Anita Karwal made the issuance of Voter ID cards possible for these families. Voter ID cards made it possible for them to exercise their right to vote during the 2014 general elections. 

The Voter ID cards also facilitated these families to acquire ration cards. The children of these families have been enrolled in mainstream school after teaching them in the Bridge School for a while. We are planning to start a hostel in Bhacahu from June 2015 onwards. We are also in process of filing applications for the allotment of residential plots to these families. .

‘જિંદગીમાં પહેલીવાર ૨૦૧૪ની લોકસભાની ચૂંટણી વખતે એમણે મતદાન કર્યું’

કચ્છના સામખ્યારીમાં ૧૦ મીર પરિવારો વર્ષોથી રહે. કામ ધંધા માટે કેટલોક સમય સ્થળાંતર કરે પણ બાકીનો સમય સામખ્યારીમાં જ રહે. વર્ષોથી અહિયાં રહેતાં હોવા છતાં મતદારકાર્ડ, રેશનકાર્ડ જેવા કોઈ આધારો એમની પાસે નહિ. ના બાળકો શાળામાં જાય. 

‘આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશન’ની મદદથી કચ્છના ભચાઉમાં વિચરતા પરિવારો સાથે કામ શરુ કર્યું અને આ મીર પરિવારો ધ્યાને આવ્યા. પોતાની ઓળખના આધારો નથી એટલે કેવી હાલાકી વેઠવી પડે છે એ સાંભળ્યું. મતદારકાર્ડ માટે અરજી કરી. આદરણીય શ્રી અનીતાબહેન કરવાલ (મુખ્ય નિર્વાચન અધિકારી)ની આ પરિવારો માટેની લાગણીના કારણે એમની સુચનાથી ૨૦ પુખ્તવયના મીર વ્યક્તિઓને પહેલીવાર મતદારકાર્ડ મળ્યાં. જિંદગીમાં પહેલીવાર ૨૦૧૪ની લોકસભાની ચૂંટણી વખતે એમણે મતદાન કર્યું. 

વિચરતી જાતિઓને મતદારકાર્ડના આધારે રેશનકાર્ડ આપવાના ઠરાવના આધારે ૧૦ પરિવારોને રેશનકાર્ડ પણ મળ્યા જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે. એમનાં બાળકોને શાળામાં પ્રવેશ અપાવ્યો. થોડો સમય એમની જ વસાહતમાં સ્કુલ પણ ચલાવી. જુન -૧૫ થી બાળકો અને એમનાં માતા-પિતા તૈયાર થાય તો ભચાઉ સેન્ટર પર જ હોસ્ટેલ કરવાનું પણ આયોજન છે. સાથે સાથે એમને સરકાર દ્વારા રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફાળવાય એ માટે અરજી કરવાનું પણ આયોજન છે.
