VSSM facilitates the process of desilting and deepening of lakes in Kankrej’s Maidkol village…

The village of Maidkol with its population of 3500 has 200 farmers. It has three lakes of which two have grown shallow as a result of mud that has accumelated through the years. The ground water  the farmers use for irrigation could be earlier sourced at 300 feet however, the levels have now plummeted to 850 feet.

Recently, the Government  made provisions and installed pipelines for the Narmada waters to reach two of the three lakes the village has. In fact one of the lakes did receive water but the sandy, parched and thirsty lake absorbed all the water in mere 15 days.

Even within those 15 days that the water stayed in the lake we removed 2 columns from our borewells. Some of the borewells whose waters had turned saline now have sweet waters. The lake is quite shallow had it been deeper we could have stored more water that could have benefited our groundwater levels,” testified Sarapanch Jesungbhai on the massive impact this water had on recharging the ground water levels.

In spite of being an economically backward village,  Maidkol elders have taken responsibility of lifting and transporting the excavated mud from the lakes to the low lying part of the village. The mud and sand is now dumped and levelled near the open grounds of crematorium, school and  temple. These areas usually get water clogged during monsoons.

Apart from this we have requested them to contribute towards the excavation of lakes to which they have shown readiness.

Amidst the depressing times when the outlook and approach of everyone remains shockingly oblivious towards such pressing issues the villagers and elders of Maidkol have portrayed tremendous foresight and awareness to partner in reviving such common property resources for a future that is brimming with water.

કાંકરેજ તાલુકાના મૈડકોલગામમાં VSSM થકી તળાવ ઊંડા કરવાનું થઈ રહ્યું છે.

3500ની વસતિવાળા મૈડકોલમાં ખેડુત ખાતેદારો લગભગ બસો છે. ગામમાં ત્રણ તળાવ છે જેમાંથી બે તળાવ છીછરા છે. પહેલાં 300 ફૂટના બોરવેલથી ખેડૂતો પિયત કરતા હાલ પાણીના તળ 850 ફૂટથી નીચે પહોંચી ગયા છે.

ગામના બે તળાવમાં નર્મદાનું પાણી નાખી શકાય તે માટેની લાઈન નખાઈ છે. જેમાંથી એક તળાવમાં તો પાણી નંખાયું પણ ખરુ જે પંદર સુધી તળાવમાં ભરેલું રહ્યું. પણ તળાવમાં રેત ઘણી છે એટલે પાણી જમીનમાં સીધુ ઉતરી જાય છે.

સરપંચ જેસુંગભાઈ કહે છે, 'પંદર દિવસ પાણી ભરાયું એમાંય અમારા બોરમાંથી બે કોલમો બહાર કાઢવી પડી. કેટલાક બોરના પાણી ખારા થઈ ગયા હતા તે મીઠા થયા. પણ તળાવ છીછરુ છે જો ઊંડુ થાય તો વધુ પાણીનો સમાવેશ થાય.'

મૈડકોલ આર્થિક રીતે બહુ સદ્ધર નહીં. છતાં તળાવો ઊંડા થાય તેમાં ગામનો ફાળો હોવો જોઈએ તેવી અમારી માંગણીની સામે માટી ઉપાડવાનું તો એમણે એમના શીરે લીધુ. આ માટી ગામની સ્મશાનભૂમી, નિશાળ ને ગામના મંદિરના પરિસરમાં નાખવાનું કર્યું. આ ત્રણે જગ્યા નીચાણમાં છે ને ત્યાં ચોમાસામાં પાણી પુષ્કળ ભરાય છે માટે.

આ સિવાય ખોદકામમાં પણ તેમનો આર્થિક સહયોગ ઉમેરાય તેવી અમારી લાગણી છે જેમાં તેઓ સહયોગ કરશે તેવી ભાવના તેમણે વ્યક્ત કરી છે.

તળાવોનું મહત્વ દિવસે દિવસે ઓછુ થઈ રહ્યું છે. ત્યારે જળસંચયના પરંપરાગત માધ્યમ એવા તળાવને સાબદા કરવા ગામલોકો સજ્જ થાય એ મોટી સજાગતા છે. મૈડકોલ ગામને પ્રણામ
